We have a unique opportunity in Alaska to know our representatives. I’ve volunteered with our state representative Maxine Dibert as she goes door to door in her district. Each time I do this, my admiration and respect for her grows. With each member of her community, she asks, and is genuinely interested in, what they think, what issues they face, what they need from their government. She demonstrates kindness, empathy, patience and, when faced with hostility or disagreement, always perseveres until she finds common ground.
She is incredibly willing to put in the hard, often uncomfortable work. Whether it’s shouldering a heavy bag of literature for hours in the cold and rain, carrying yard signs, or engaging with a neighbor, she remains thoughtful and non judgemental – and gently persistent. She’s been in every neighborhood in her district multiple times and is familiar with her constituents and their concerns.
Compassion, humble hard work, the ability to listen and to seek common ground. These are the qualities we need in these times and all times. This is how problems get solved.
